Bookmaking for Calligraphers

Pacific ScribesSan Jose, CA

September 14, 2019 - Showcase your Calligraphy with an Envelope Fan Book & a Star Book With Sewn Pockets

September 15, 2019 - Stitched Bindings: Single Needle Coptic Stitch (Triangle) & French Link Stitch Handmade Books

Looking for special books to hold your calligraphy? Make them yourself! Create four beautiful hard cover books in two days. We’ll begin with an Envelope Fan Book and progress to a star book with pockets on the first day. On the second day we will begin with a Single-Needle Coptic Stitch and progress to a French Link. Each of the books will have cover designs of your choice. The Envelope Fan Book and Star Book has removable inserts, perfect for calligraphic experimentation! Your Coptic Stitch  and French Link books will lay flat after binding so you can enjoy using them for your calligraphy. Use them as special practice books or create a work of art for yourself or as a gift. The instructor will provide instructions with step-by-step photographs so that you can make the books again and again in your home studio.

Learn and practice basic pop-up techniques then use your favorite recycled books to create hard cover concertina filled with pop-ups. The instructor will provide instructions with step-by-step photographs so that you can make the books again and again in your home studio.

Artists' Book Coterie

San Diego Book Arts, San Diego, CA

Saturday, March 7 - Sunday, August 9, 2020 (Ongoing, 2 days per month for 6 months)

You’re invited to join Ginger Burrell in 2020 for an in-depth exploration of artists’ books. In this 6 month class (2 days per month) we’ll cover everything from idea generation to color theory to page design. Collage, printmaking, and pop-ups are just a few of the techniques we’ll investigate to express our ideas. We’ll learn and practice new bindings every month. You’ll get step-by-step instructions with photos for each technique and project. More than a class, this will be a creative community where we share ideas and feedback to help each other grow. We’ll present our completed books in a gallery show at the end of class.  (Details)
